NetApp recently announced that it ranked #6 on the Crain’s New York Business Journal’s annual “Best Place to Work in New York City” list for 2012. This marks the third consecutive year that NetApp has appeared in the top 10 on this distinguished list. This #6 ranking affirms NetApp’s unique company culture and strong commitment to employees, customers, and partners around the world.

NetApp Named #3 Best Workplace in the World

Today, we’re talking with Gary Mashia, Project Manager:

First of all, Gary, you’re obviously very good at what you do. How do you get such high customer scores?
First and foremost, I am there to satisfy the customer’s needs. I meet all deadlines. When I complete reports, I make sure that they are accurate and on time. Regarding their storage array, I listen and give them what they want and need.

How has Entelligence contributed to your success?
During the interview process, Helen asked me what I want to accomplish and what kinds of technology I wanted to work on, and she really keyed in on the things I wanted to do. Then, she found the perfect role for me. And, she checks in with me every so often to see if I am still on the track we laid out in the beginning.

In a business that can have such high turnover, and where people with your skills and knowledge are in such demand, why do you stay with Entelligence?
Entelligence takes care of their employees and they take care of their customers. Part of the reason I stay is I love the technology I am working on. But there’s another part to it all. Entelligence shows they care about me and my family. On birthdays, they send cards and gift cards, things of that nature, and I appreciate that. They even remember my kids’ birthdays. I’ve never had a company do that.

So, Ashok, tell us a little about your background.
I’ve always been in the high tech field. Entelligence is the smallest company I have ever worked for, and in many ways that is a plus. I can communicate directly with my manager or the people who run the company anytime I want. Other places say employees are valued, but at the end of the day, you are one among thousands. Entelligence really does appreciate what I do for them. They listen and make decisions based on what employees are telling them.

Tell us about what your high customer satisfaction scores. How do you do it?
Well, I start all projects with a Statement of Work (SOW), but the first thing I do is get with the customer and determine if their expectations match what the SOW is saying. If there are any variations, I write those down and bring them to the project manager so that everyone is on the same page.

Then, I ask what the timelines are, and what their ‘pain points’ are. Their answers to these questions might be addressed in the SOW or it might not. I try to go above and beyond and not just say ‘this is my job, or that is NOT my job. I see everyone involved in a project as my client and I want them all to be VERY SATISFIED before I walk away from the project; salespeople, HDS, the customer, EVERYONE. I ALWAYS ask for feedback from the customer before I leave. I always ask if I could have done anything better.

How has Entelligence contributed to your success?
Entelligence has a very clear process for how to deliver the best customer experience. Taken step by step, it works. When I came on board my mentor, Mason Jones, took a lot of time with me. Now, when people come on board, they can follow those same steps and learn as I did how to deliver great customer service every time.

What do you like about Entelligence? Why do you stay?
They appreciate what I do for them and they show it. They appreciate their employees and they listen. And, I like working on my own schedule and I like to work freely. I’m a self-motivator. I don’t need external motivation. My goals are very clear on what I want. Entelligence lets me do my thing and if I ever need anything I go to them. If they ever need anything from me, they come to me. We have a good mutual understanding. Secondly, our values are very similar. I don’t care about climbing the corporate ladder. I like doing what I do, and they give me room to do just that.

We currently have 95% Very Satisfied customers here at Entelligence IT. Most people in our business would be deliriously happy with that, but we are not. Our goals is to have every single company we work with (and, by extension, every single person) give us a 5 (Very Satisfied) on our 1-5 satisfaction scale. We want 100% ‘Very Satisfied’, and we won’t stop working on it until we’re there.

But, I acknowledge that 95% is remarkable, so let’s talk about how I think we achieve that number:

  • First, we hire only the best people. We carefully select just the right person for the job. In a business that is scrambling to find enough qualified people, it is sometimes difficult to pass over a candidate who we desperately need to wait for the RIGHT candidate. But we do just that, and we reap the benefits of being patient and selective.
  • We continuously train and re-train our people so that they stay current. They are always prepared and up-to-date on the latest trends and technology. Their tool box is replenished as often as necessary.
  • We as a company support our experts in the field with a ‘team behind every tech’. They never have to go it alone. Answers and help are at their fingertips every minute of every day.
  • We’ve built a great workplace that’s friendly and efficient. It’s collaborative, fast-moving, and fun.

Because of that, we have exceedingly low turnover. In a business where more than half of IT workers are looking for greener pastures, our turnover is less than 10%. That means our techs get to know their clients, and they go deep with them, understanding in detail their issues, their people, and their industries.
